About this artwork
This painting was painted on the island of Itaparica, Bahía in Brazil, during an artist residence of the painter as a scholarship holder of the SACATAR Foundation last summer of 2017. It took 2 full months to complete the painting. The model is a young woman who belongs to the staff of the Sacatar. Her name is Lavínia. This is how the title of the picture was created.
She wears the traditional costume of women from São Salvador da Bahía. This consists… of a skirt and several crossed petticoats and is complemented by a short-sleeved ruffle blouse made of the same material. The fabric is pure cotton in Richelieu lace. The more lace the richer the dress. A piece of cloth (Torço) is knotted in the hair. At Lavínia, this only wraps around the forehead, leaving hair free.
« The focus of my work is the Being (human or animal) in all its inner relationships with the universe. »
