About this artwork
'At the time when heaven and earth had barely separated, a dragon was born from the first breaths of the world. It wound its way between the mountains, and its spirit watched over the life-giving waters. The gods entrusted it with a pearl, a symbol of wisdom and power, so that it might protect the harmony of humankind and nature.
But he appeared only to those whose hearts were pure. To them alone did he reveal the brilliance of his pearl, a promise… of prosperity and happiness. Thus the dragon remained the invisible guardian of the world, a reminder that strength is worthless without wisdom, and that harmony is born from respect between humankind and nature.
Marie Calmette uses acrylics, ink, and collage, drawing on her graphic arts training in Paris and Bordeaux, and enriched by her extensive experience of travel and aviation. Her hybrid technique blends abstraction and figurative touches, incorporating life drawings, writing, and materials to explore the immediacy of the gesture. Her experimental style invites questioning and freedom of interpretation. Her art, deeply committed and intimate, conveys the vitality of the world, human fragility, and the urgent need to experience the beauty and tension of life, while celebrating creative doubt.
