The series "Heavy Crude" depicts people fighting for survival with sticky liquid materials that threaten to suffocate them.
The artist argues that heavy crude oil is the starting point for industrial mass production and, consequently, environmental pollution, a blessing and a curse in equal measure. Oil is used to produce plastic, a material that has transformed the world and remains indispensable in our daily lives. Relatively quickly, a useful… and sought-after material became a major environmental problem. Plastic waste is accumulating rapidly and threatens the general pollution of water, air, land, and food.

Mario Oberhofer works with mixed media such as oil and egg tempera as well as gouache, drawing on his solid training at the Ortweinschule Graz and studies with renowned professors. He favors large-format, realistic-figurative depictions, often dominated by black and blue, to capture the expressive tension between humanity and matter. His artworks convey an intense, restless energy and touch upon profound emotions, because, as he says, he wants to "place the brush on the wounds of time."
