About this artwork
We witness a city site, a dock and a young tomboy girl or boy holding a machine gun on, what I presume to be, an enormous banner that covers a wall of a high-rise seen from the riverside up. What kind of aggressive commercial could this be? And why does it dominate public space? Do we believe violence is kind of cool? The yellow words ‘Keep Smiling’ jumps at us, as if the graffiti ‘artist’ reacted to the image in front of him. We can only guess.… Now, it almost becomes a must to keep smiling with the smile of a cynical clown to survive cynicism. This image is cynical indeed and almost beyond imagination. But this display is as real as the daily news. I captured this scenery before you earlier on camera while visiting Vienna in 2018. Reality can be stranger than fiction. And of course this was an absurdist and unexpected gift to an artist like me. This is why I made a realistic painted re-presentation of this very image.
