The petals come from a hydrangea petiolaris that grows up an old stone wall in my garden. The flowers are white but when they finish blooming they turn a warm yellow brown and stay on the plant for a long time. The freezing process beings out the texture of the petals. I chose to have a dark background to really show off the warm tones. This is a calm but strong image that will bring a touch of warmth into a room.
This is a giclée print on Hanemuhle… fine art paper.
For me photography is a process that can open a window into another world. I specialise in macro photography of botanical subjects. However I do not make scientifically correct images. I use fresh material from my garden and freeze the subjects in deionised water using Petri dishes or large ice cube trays. In a sense this process is a literal freezing of time, analogous to photography itself. Rather than producing ‘tack sharp’ images I use ice to create visual barriers, through bubbles, cracks and distortions to create a sense of other-worldly mystery. The viewer has to work harder to ‘read’ familiar plant forms making the act of seeing more conscious and deliberate. I am now starting to explore mixing deionised water with tap water in different proportions, and how this affects what is revealed and concealed.
