About this artwork
This work is part of the Demimonde series, in which I portray female figures who stand outside the social mainstream—not conformist, but alert, sensitive, special.
In Demimonde 2, the figure sits in a private, almost timeless space. Her gaze is calm, perhaps slightly distracted, while her posture conveys openness and self-determination. The open book is more than just a prop—it represents knowledge, inwardness, and a silent form of power.
I'm… not interested in the classic nude here. I'm interested in how a woman presents herself when no one is watching—or when she deliberately exposes herself to the gaze, but on her own terms.
The colors move between warm ochre, rich gold and cool blue – like two poles between which their existence unfolds.
Mariya Naydis is a Munich-based painter who works primarily in oil on canvas, occasionally with watercolor, pastel, or oil pastel, and received extensive training from Mikhail Chernyavsky. She develops her magical realist style through intuitive reduction, superimposition, and deliberate alienation of female figures whose identities oscillate between symbol, reality, and projection. Her works create an atmosphere of tension, longing, and transformation, inviting the viewer to enter new emotional spaces.
