About this artwork
I wanted to paint a picture of how young girls (in the Netherlands) dress at the age of three or four. On the one hand, they want to be fairies, but at the same time, they also want to be very cool. So they wear petticoats with cool jackets and big shoes.
Marjon van Boeckel is a painter with a strong background in realism, using oil paint on linen and drawing inspiration from everyday moments captured in her own photographs. She employs a meticulous, layered technique focused on essence and clarity, with soft transitions and a masterful attention to light, fabric, and atmosphere. Her realistic style frames subjects so they gently emerge from their backgrounds, emphasizing both strength and vulnerability. Through her art, she evokes the quiet beauty and emotional resonance found in simple, familiar scenes, inviting viewers to find extraordinary grace in the ordinary. She trained as a crafts teacher. She worked as a ceramicist for 15 years, after which she further developed her painting skills with private lessons from renowned artists.
