About this artwork
The Maternal Dream is an early artwork in my development as a young art student attending the Ontario College of Art located in Toronto, Canada. The concept of the painting is based upon the Greek mythological goddess of all creation “Gaia”. Of all gods revered in ancient Greece, none held as much influence as the great mother goddess herself. Known most famously as Mother Earth, Gaia goddess is the origin of all life on Earth and was the first god… to have existed in Greek cosmology.
Mark Richard Parkin is a multidisciplinary artist with classical training, whose background spans prestigious art education in Canada, Europe, and the UK, and extensive international teaching experience. His work skillfully blends traditional oil, watercolor, drawing, and printmaking techniques with bold experimentation, often incorporating organic materials and found objects in a surrealist, assemblage style. He conjures dreamlike worlds through direct brushwork, layering, and meticulous detail, creating thought-provoking juxtapositions that explore consciousness, science, and the borders of reality. His art pulses with psychological intensity, inviting viewers into worlds of existential wonder and introspective emotion.
