About this artwork
A woman who transmutes energies, as the emerald does: immortal, mirror of the sun, bearer of life on Earth. Her essence is magical, permanent, and malleable, becoming a metaphor for the achievement of spiritual perfection. She is light and divinity in their purest form. With her haughty and serene gaze, she reflects power and personal affirmation; her only jewel, an emerald, is the symbol of her inner strength. This bald woman, stripped of everything… except her emblem of power, stands as a being who has achieved harmony between the earthly and the divine, a reflection of balance and self-confidence, where the emerald becomes the representation of her mastery over herself.
Martha Ariza, a Colombian optometrist and painter, uses mixed media such as inks, acrylics, oils, and natural pigments on canvas or wood. Her painting is figurative, emphasizing color and occasionally playing with contrasts of light and shadow to intensify the drama of her compositions. Her work explores migration, forced displacement, and the loss and revaluation of identity, primarily through the Afro-descendant female figure. It reflects the courage, dignity, and beauty of these women, as well as the resilience and struggle that transcends time.
