This painting is the second, larger version of this motif:
an ancient hornbeam. It is coloured slightly differently, the shape
however, it has been preserved. In my tree pictures, I attach particular importance to preserving the unique shape of the trees and to creating abstraction in the picture, especially in terms of color. The old giant trees have an incredible charisma and effect due to their shape, which has grown over centuries, and I want… to explore and emphasize this in my pictures. My life and work here in the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve gives me new opportunities to do this every day...

Matthias Bargholz is an artist based in Germany whose paintings have been exhibited nationally and in Brazil. In addition, his art has been featured in publications such as the Ostsee Zeitung and the Hagenower Kreisblatt. Originally inspired by classical modernism, Bargholz views the line as an independant and active element in a composition, as well as being "the direct expression of intuition and the infinite possibilities of form". His distinctive pieces are created with acrylics and oils on canvas.
