About this artwork
In the "Martyrologia" series, Maximilian Davis develops a series of paintings and drawings around a strict three-part structure. The format is reminiscent of the triptych, yet rejects narrative and the transcendent. Instead, it becomes a framework for pressure, fragmentation, and suspension.
The outer zones are restless fields where gestures accumulate and signs clash. Black forms spread across them, obscuring and silencing what lies beneath. These… veils obliterate but simultaneously create a strong, commanding presence that shapes the entire surface.
At the center lies a containment zone. Rather than dissipating the turbulence around it, it keeps it in check, like a compression chamber in which forces are trapped without release.
A limited color palette and charred textures give the works an austere tone.

Maximilian Davis is a painter, draftsman, and sculptor based in Austria whose works have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Norway, and India. Through his diverse compositions, he explores themes relating to literature and fleeting moments, capturing poems and passages with a visual language that is fused with metaphors and "metaphysical depth". Davis most often creates with acrylics, oils, and lacquer on canvas.
