About this artwork
In my latest series, titled “Which Roots?” I explore the relationship between the figure and their environment; their transformation and adaptation to their new geography, and the politics of seeing and being seen as a newcomer and an immigrant. In my current works, the figures are pictured in lush, rich forest settings with lots of change, and their resilience is evident through their metaphoric relationship with the environment and the various… symbols within. “Encounters" are the symbols that accompany and witness this journey.
Mehmet Uskul harnesses the fluidity of oils on canvas, stemming from a profound Turkish art education and the life shift to Washington, DC. His cubist-inspired style fractures the familiar, realigning forms to explore time, adaptation, and belonging, with each plane of color and structure narrating distinct yet convergent moments. His works resonate with the nostalgia of displacement, the struggle for integration, and the universal quest for home.
