About this artwork
Non-Combatants This Way is a study in direction, division, and quiet movement within structured space. Constructed from ceramic tile on plyboard, the work draws on the visual language of urban signage and architectural surfaces—materials that guide, separate, and often go unnoticed in daily life.
The central chevron motif suggests flow and instruction, echoing the subtle authority of wayfinding systems found in transit networks and civic environments.… These directional forms, rendered in stark black and white, create a sense of imposed movement—forward, downward, onward—without offering context or destination. Alongside them, blocks of colour—green, amber, blue, and muted pink—act as coded interruptions, referencing zoning, safety markings, or fragmented identities within shared spaces.
The title introduces a human tension into an otherwise formal composition. “Non-combatants” implies vulnerability, neutrality, and the presence of unseen conflict.
