This painting is a play of variations. There are four sets of 6, 5, 4, and 3 squares. Each square is aligned with two others, sometimes of the same color, sometimes not, sometimes in the foreground, sometimes in the background. The eye inevitably moves from one grouping to another, looking for correspondences and differences, revealing different facets of the same color. I am a biologist by training and a self-taught painter. For several years, I have been creating oil paintings on canvas, the result of a constant exploration of the world of abstraction. I try to create unusual arrangements of forms and colors, oscillating between conceptual minimalism and gestural spontaneity. The result is paintings that appear stripped down at first glance, but whose complexity is revealed upon closer observation. In all cases, I strive for a composition that is both harmonious and contrasting.
