About this artwork
This is my second series of Nine Men Portraits.
I often sketch portraits in my notebooks as free exercises of imagination — spontaneous trials where I let go of control and allow forms to emerge on their own. I begin with a few lines and shapes, letting them suggest the trace of a face, a glance, or a mood. Once an image begins to appear, I bring it to life with colour, volume, and contrast, following what the drawing itself seems to propose.
In… these exercises, I am probably influenced by Expressionist masters like Lohse — as well as by Cubism and the chromatic freedom of Fauvism. Each portrait comes as a play of chance and intuition, a face born out of nowhere: comic, fragile, and human. Yet my unconscious probably imposes its own consistency, revealing a fantasy world of provocative faces and strange gazes.
These nine A5 portrait sketches are brought together here as a single composition, each mounted on a large sheet of white paper measuring 80 by 60 centimetres.

Born in Tokyo and raised in Japan and Vietnam, I later lived in Africa, the UK and for twenty years in India. These places were not stops on a journey but temporary homelands, each leaving their own colour and rhythm within me. I paint what has marked me: a bend of the Ganges at dawn, the mineral light of Ladakh, Icelandic wilderness, the twilight of Rajasthani bazaars, the meditative atmosphere of Indian classical music. At times the real shifts into the imaginary — Goan rooms opening onto the sea, murmuring jungles, humorous portraits of musicians, rajas and yogis. My style is spontaneous and expressionist, guided by intuition and shaped by colour, emotion and memory. I paint to honour the faraway worlds that continue to inhabit me.
