About this artwork
This is another of my fantasy paintings of the Indian jungle.
Actually inspired by an ancient drawing on a scroll, seen in the Musée Guimet in Paris.
Here one can see a 'gurukul' which means 'yogi school'. The yogis teach yoga and other ascetic disciplines in the middle of the jungle, the jungle of India which is like Mother Nature. Old yogis are practicing different asanas or postures and younger disciples follow them. And around the camp, one can… see surprised nymphs and animals staring at them.
The whole environment is quiet, peaceful and full of colours.
Inspired by many encounters with real yogis in India, as well as old paintings and manuscripts.
And my own fantasy. In my own style with some reference to Le Douanier Rousseau.

Born in Tokyo and raised in Japan and Vietnam, I later lived in Africa, the UK and for twenty years in India. These places were not stops on a journey but temporary homelands, each leaving their own colour and rhythm within me. I paint what has marked me: a bend of the Ganges at dawn, the mineral light of Ladakh, Icelandic wilderness, the twilight of Rajasthani bazaars, the meditative atmosphere of Indian classical music. At times the real shifts into the imaginary — Goan rooms opening onto the sea, murmuring jungles, humorous portraits of musicians, rajas and yogis. My style is spontaneous and expressionist, guided by intuition and shaped by colour, emotion and memory. I paint to honour the faraway worlds that continue to inhabit me.
