About this artwork
Part of the series Bulgarian Folklore, this graphite drawing portrays a young woman dressed in traditional Bulgarian costume as she carries buckets of water — a scene deeply rooted in village life and old customs.
In the past, going to the village fountain was an important social ritual. It was there that young people often met, exchanged glances, and began the first quiet steps toward love. According to tradition, if a young man drank from the water… carried by a girl, it was a sign of affection and a promise between them.
Executed in graphite on cardboard, the drawing emphasizes delicate light and shadow, highlighting the grace, dignity, and quiet strength of the Bulgarian village woman.
Miglena Dyankova is a Bulgarian artist whose work explores the emotional and cultural landscapes of her homeland. Through drawing and painting, she creates images that move between intimate human stories, traditional folklore, and the quiet poetry of the countryside. A distinctive part of her practice is her meticulous pointillisam drawings executed with rapidograph pen, where thousands of microscopic dots gradually build form, light, and volume. This slow and almost meditative technique requires exceptional patience and precision, giving the works a jewel-like quality. She develops several thematic series. In The Gentle Nude, she explores the elegance of the female body through restrained, poetic compositions where nudity is suggested rather than exposed. Whether through delicate drawings or expressive oil paintings, Miglena’s art seeks to capture the fragile balance between people, nature, and memory — revealing moments of strength, tenderness, and timeless human connection.
