About this artwork
The representation refers to landscapes as they wander in the memory. Figurative elements can evoke recognition, yet the entire image remains ambivalent because the abstract surfaces mainly testify to the materials I work with. This creates the idea of an artificially constructed nature, which is in line with today's reality in which the idea of ‘nature’ mainly testifies to the persistent illusion that there would still be something like an original… nature existing outside humans.
Mikel van Gelderen, painter, crafts acrylic and charcoal masterpieces on paper, rooted in a rich tradition of landscape representation. His techniques subtly contrast fleeting digital visuals with the slow process of physical creation, incorporating both figurative and abstract elements. Loaded with introspection potential, his artwork depicts dreamy, artificially constructed landscapes, urging viewers to confront today's realities against persisting illusions of untouched nature.
