About this artwork
For me, the person depicted has something majestic about her; she gazes at the viewer like a queen. Alongside her greatness and dignity, she also reveals vulnerability. The glazed painting on a wooden panel allows the wood grain to show through. The skin becomes thin, revealing irregularities (in the wood).
Dignity and vulnerability in one are what I tried to convey in this portrait.
Monika Wetz, trained at Vienna's University of Applied Arts, enriches the art scene with her sensitive acrylic portraits on wooden panels. They are mirrors of the soul, a kind of inner view. They show us the most diverse aspects of being human. Her signature style features transparent layers of paint that allow the wood grain to show through, and detailed contours of the eyes, nose, and mouth, which she renders with colored pencils. Her emotionally charged portraits of women invite the viewer to deep reflection and personal dialogue.
