About this artwork
In this painting, I portray the iconic figure of Mr. T, a larger-than-life personality who defined much of the popular culture of the 1980s and 1990s. Born in the 80s and growing up through the 90s, Mr. T was a powerful and unforgettable presence in my childhood imagination. His intense expression, distinctive mohawk hairstyle, and unmistakable persona made him a frequent subject of drawings I created with friends during our primary school days.…
Returning to him now as a subject in paint brings back vivid memories of that time when pop culture figures like Mr. T felt heroic, bold, and endlessly fascinating to me as a young artist discovering the joy of drawing. This work reflects not only his image but also the nostalgia of growing up in that era.
His famous phrase, “I pity the fool,” along with his instantly recognizable look, continues to symbolize the confidence and fearlessness.
Nana Assibey-Bonsu, trained in sculpture but now devoted to painting, draws from a rich background in visual arts to create striking figurative and abstract works. His technique fuses bold, high-contrast palettes, expressive brushwork, strong lines, and textured, layered surfaces, often using sculptural thinking and masking processes to reveal vibrant forms. His art vibrates with energy, nostalgia, and a powerful sense of presence, channeling the intensity of cultural icons and the confidence and grace of womanhood, serving ultimately as a storehouse of captured moments and deep emotion.
