About this artwork
This self-portrait explores the emotional tension artists often face when confronting the daunting "empty white sheet of paper." The piece is a personal statement against creative paralysis—a visual declaration of courage in the face of self-doubt. Using delicate layers of watercolor and pencil, the portrait merges realism with dreamlike symbolism.
My hair, flowing like ink or thought, fills the page and transforms into a tangle of lines inhabited… by birds—symbols of freedom, imagination, and the voice of intuition. The birds, nested within the strands, reflect the ideas and inspirations that are always present, even when hidden. The purple hues suggest both mystery and internal depth, while the focused gaze and the firm grip on the fabric evoke a quiet resolve.
"I Don’t Afraid" is a confrontation and a release—a way of reclaiming the blank page not as an obstacle, but as a beginning.
Natalia Nik is a contemporary artist based in Budapest, originally from Russia. Working across mixed media, she combines digital drawing with traditional techniques to create contemplative works characterized by softness, atmospheric depth, and poetic restraint. Her practice explores states of reverie and suspension between reality and imagination, where form gradually dissolves into mood and inner presence. Natalia’s work encompasses landscape, portraiture, symbolic animal imagery, and abstract explorations, all unified by a quiet, introspective approach. Her works have been exhibited internationally and are held in private collections in Europe and beyond.
