About this artwork
"Elbetörn" is a work of art that captures a profound interpretation of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and its significance for humanity in its abstract collage of an original recycled sailcloth and an old nautical chart from 1767.
The theme of the artwork spans the areas of sustainability, coastal protection and the changing nature we treat over time.
The use of an original canvas and an old nautical chart with a view from the 18th century… gives the work historical depth and reminds us how closely humanity has always been connected to the seas. The depiction of Otterndorf, Cuxhaven and the Land Hadeln on the 1767 map adds a local and temporal dimension to the work, inviting the viewer to reflect on the history and changes in the environment.
The abstract collage as a metaphor for the diversity and complexity of the Wadden Sea and its ecosystems.
Nele Kugler now lives and works in Otterndorf near Cuxhaven on the North Sea. Natural forces, the Wadden Sea, and the tides of the North Sea create an emotional connection to art in her paintings. Her art also provides a space for reflection on ecological issues, sustainability, and the beauty of nature. Nele Kugler is an artist who combines abstract and maritime worlds with a special flair. In her maritime works, she incorporates original materials such as sailcloth, nautical charts, and driftwood—objects steeped in history that she collects in her adopted home on the North Sea. Her abstract works reveal a different facet of Nele Kugler: powerful, colorful, and full of energy and emotion. These images sparkle with expression and vibrancy—a contrast to, and at the same time a complement to, her maritime side. Nele Kugler's art is complex, authentic and deeply connected to her surroundings and her emotions.
