About this artwork
A large abstract composition built from a series of irregular geometric blocks, creating a sense of weight, rhythm, and movement. Each shape is defined by what seems solid fields of color but with a textured surface that reveals subtle marks and variations beneath the pigment.
Set against a dark background, the color blocks appear to float or stack in an almost sculptural manner. Their uneven edges and slight shifts in alignment introduce an organic… tension that contrasts with the simplicity of the forms. Small flecks of paint and hints of underlayers add depth and character, giving the work a vibrancy.
Canvas has enough spare around the edges to be wrapped on stretched bars - Material size: 160 x 220 / 140 x 200cm (actual artwork size)
Nicholas Molloy, a painter trained in illustration and experienced across countries, works primarily in acrylics, meticulously building and sanding back layers to create rich, textured surfaces. His style ranges from “abstract architectural” pieces highlighting geometric interplay and industrial motifs, to expressive landscapes of the Scottish coast and playful, naive botanicals. Using a reductive technique that reveals ghostly, weathered traces beneath his compositions, he seeks to evoke balance, discovery, and dynamic visual intrigue—inviting viewers to find new details and feel a harmonious tension between structure and organic unpredictability.
