About this artwork
The title of this work comes from "The Book of Sand", a short story by Jorge Luis Borges about a nameless narrator and his quest to understand everything written in a book that has infinite pages but no beginning & no end. In a few pages, this compact story addresses multiple ideas & a plethora of emotions, similar to how much a painting can embody numerous feelings. The narrator's initial pleasure in the book spirals into obsession, and the the…
book ultimately consumes his life. The man struggles to maintain balance and reminded me of my personal relationship to painting where I am constantly shifting between letting go and controlling the paint. Like many artists, the narrator's days are spent in solitude as he sacrifices everything to the the magical book. My painting and the gradation from dark to light represent the happiness of discovery and living in world with the same limitless possibilities found in the Book of Sand.
