In his series 'backfigures' – cover versions of Caspar David Friedrich's paintings – Berlin-based photographer nostrokes blends photography, digital visualization, and painterly aesthetics. The figure seen from behind, an icon of German Romanticism, symbolizes a profound connection between humanity and its environment. nostrokes translates the themes of isolation, reflection, intimacy, and distance into the present through photography. His images,… transformed into paintings using AI prompts, achieve a powerful emotional depth through this transformation. The authenticity of the photographs begins to blur. The framed and varnished original print on canvas measures 160x120 cm and is owned by the artist. Here you can purchase a print on fine art photographic paper (edition of 50). Photographed at Berlin Tempelhof Airport.
"Everyday life often carries a deep meaning." nostrokes has been photographing people for editorial and advertising work for three decades. His art draws from this long and intense relationship with photography, which he constantly reinterprets. "I follow the different paths of photography and see how far and where they lead me. Back then, everything was analog, then came the hybrid approach using scanners, then pure digital photography, and now AI is here—it's exciting to see where photographic art will develop." Analog photographs form the foundation of his work. But when the photographed space becomes too confining, he digitally expands the spaces of his photographs. In some series, he transforms his photos into paintings using prompts and prints the final works on framed and varnished canvas. "I don't believe in the precise reproduction of truth; I work on inviting personal perception."
