In this piece, I captured a quiet moment using pastel to blend impressionism with realism. The faded tones and soft edges invite viewers to reflect on the stillness of everyday life, while the solitary Volkswagen Beetle evokes a sense of the past. It brings a calming, contemplative energy to any space, like a pause amidst the rush.
"My work is not nostalgic, but more a reflection of a time period with authenticity in everyday life."
Oscar Spierenburg, a painter and graphic artist from a family of artists, is autodidact shaped by the Dutch art tradition, particularly his home town Haarlem. With a style leaning toward Impressionism and contemporary realism, he focuses on cityscapes and landscapes. He uses oil paint and pastels to explore light with muted colors, layered in transparent layers, and decisive brushwork. His etches and screen prints are black and white, sometimes with one supporting color. His work, often depicting vintage cars and trams, resonates with a quiet yearning for authenticity and radiates atmosphere, light, and shadow with emotional depth.
