About this artwork

Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, pigment prints, fabrics (collage) on canvas.
Working with a process of layering and removing marks, alienated by overlapping layers of overpainted pigment prints, the painting deals with the manipulation, re-utilisation and disappearance of hotel stationery, combined with gestural abstraction. Incorporating both additive and subtractive techniques, different mediums and varnishes,… the multi-layered tension between color and form provide the energy in this artwork. The painting references its own process, and brings to mind Charles Baudelaire’s flâneur who walks the city in order to experience it.

Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing.
