In the » Museum Shop Paintings« Peter Vahlefeld employs one of the most popular image distribution systems of modernity: the packaging of art in the form of museum shop merchandise. In this case he brings Goya’s iconic painting »El Quitasol« as a 7 piece self-adhesive file label, purchased at the Prado… museum shop, into the present. Art caught in the dialectics of the cultural asset as a consumer object which is being interpreted in entirely new ways. Peter Vahlefeld rejects the assumption that icons must remain fixed and immutable. By embracing their manipulation, the artist asserts his fascination with the meaning of images, and to examine art as a construct.

« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
