In order to achieve a subtle combination of form and content, an overpainting of printed matter that is first executed in oil on the printed page, is scanned, processed on the computer, printed on different kinds of materials, and then reprocessed and recombined on canvas. The overpainting, though obscured, is… fundamental to the picture. It is literally the starting point, and provides the structure, intersecting lines, and the relationship between forms, fabrics, pigment prints and paint. The final artwork blends all these unrelated elements that find unity in their arrangement of the painting.

« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
