About this artwork
Acrylic, acrylic based medium, varnish UV protection, oil, and pigment prints (collage) on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. It will be shipped in 4 boxes, each one with a volume weight of 39 kg.
The basis of the artwork is an overpainted advertisement of Andy Warhol's »Flowers«. The overpainted printed matter has been digitalized and reworked on the computer. Parts of it have been printed out as pigment prints (collage) and mounted on canvas.… The overpainting serves as an underpainting that loops behind expressionist brushwork. Unlike on the computer, where the functional logic is based on described rules, the material on canvas becomes the topic as a sequence of actions—taking on an almost sculptural character. The result is a multilayered composition of thick layers of oil paint and prints creating complex chromatic effects, and also producing a sense of depth.

« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
