About this artwork

The artwork is about the surface tension of different media: canvas, fabrics, paint and prints are approaching materiality as a surface condition. The surface is here configured as an architecture to be dismantled. Peter Vahlefeld plays with the notion of information loss of hotel… stationery by sanding it down to bare canvas adding a process that disrupts and reveals flaws and cracks on the pictorial surface. This working process is about continuous re-assembly, re-organisation and re-construction of the image, zigzagging between creation, ruin and epiphany.

« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
Peter Vahlefeld has participated in many solo exhibitions in Germany as well as in annual art fairs such as Art Karlsruhe.
