Carved, rather than painted, the result of thick layers of paint, prints and fabrics channels a sense of depth and painterliness. Fast-paced strokes are offset with steady washes and the consistency of paint is varied; thin translucent areas are complemented by thick opaque mark making. Inherent to the creative process is the element of… painting over, rubbing out and erasing previous markings, where oil paint seems to have been dragged, pulled, splashed, and splattered across the canvas. At times buttery and fully suspended, at others sand-paper dry, the richly textured ground never stands on its own but is always in conversation with the overpainted surface.

« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
