About this artwork
Located in the Kokatahi River – Whitcombe River area, the Whitcombe Pass Track takes you through the very rugged bush clad valleys of the lower Hokitika and Whitcombe Rivers to the Main Divide.
The oldest part of the hut was probably built in 1908. It was either refurbished or completely rebuilt in the late 1940s for the first Westland deer culling operation. The concrete floor dates from 1957. The hut was upgraded by the New Zealand Forest Service… in 1983. It is a faithfully preserved link with early deer culling days.
The hut is a slab hut with hand-hewn frame, iron roof and concrete floor. The hut is situated in a small flat between two deep, forested gorges, 5km from the Great Divide and 13km from a major pass.
Peter Whitcombe is a New Zealand-based fine artist with a background in graphic design and printing. Drawing on this creative foundation, Peter has transitioned into fine art, where he now works primarily with oils and acrylics to capture the diverse beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes.
His work spans a wide range of scenery—from tranquil farmlands and dramatic waterfalls to iconic destinations that showcase the country’s natural splendour. With a focus on realism, Peter’s paintings are known for their lifelike detail, clarity, and vibrant colour.
Initially working in acrylics for their fast drying time, Peter now prefers oils for their richness and ability to maintain brightness over time. This shift has allowed him to bring greater depth and luminosity to his work.
