About this artwork
In Greek mythology, Medusa is often depicted as the snake-haired creature whose gaze turned people to stone. But why? Medusa was a beautiful young woman with enchanting hair. Legend has it that she was raped by Poseidon in the temple of Athena. But instead of protecting her, the goddess Athena punished Medusa herself: she transformed her into a monster and banished her.
Why was the… victim punished and not the perpetrator?
This ancient legend is, unfortunately, still shockingly relevant today. We still live in a world where women all too often bear the burden of injustice, condemnation, and guilt. Where power is abused, and where victims are condemned instead of being heard.
“Medusa” is my way of pausing and reflecting on the injustice that women suffered then and now.
Do you dare to look her in the eyes?
