About this artwork
Portrait Study of a Young Girl was created during a single live session, allowing the immediacy of the moment to guide every brushstroke. Working from life invited an honest intimacy—there is no staging, no reworking, only the quiet dialogue between painter and sitter.
In this study, I focused on capturing the subtle shifts in light, the softness of youthful features, and the fleeting expressions that appear only when time is limited. The constraints… of a one‑session sitting heightened my attention and intuition, giving the portrait a spontaneous sincerity that cannot be replicated later in the studio.
This piece stands as an exploration of presence: the presence of the young girl before me, and my own presence as I observed, interpreted, and translated her into paint.
Petra Gruiters, a student of Fine Arts, brings life to Belgian linen and wooden panels with her finest oils. Utilizing traditional techniques, she crafts masterpieces showcasing handmade dresses, flowing draperies, and delicate florals with a human form underneath. Her work exudes an ethereal exploration of femininity, intertwining the gently fierce with vulnerability, a tale told in tender oil strokes that invite introspection.
