About this artwork
From the center, red breaks into magenta and carmine, shooting upwards and outwards in a radial pattern – like a crack opening. Around this glowing center, areas of gold and ochre are arranged, interspersed with traces of green and turquoise, before everything fades into light gray.
It is precisely in these lighter areas – gold, light blue – that the crack structure is most clearly visible. As it dried, the lime plaster and marble dust left their… own mark: fine, mosaic-like cracks that refract the light differently than the smooth, flowing red areas next to them. Add to that shellac, which I was working with for the first time – it lends the warm, brownish tone to the painting.
I didn't control these cracks, I worked with them.
"Departure" was created intuitively, without a plan – from the desire to paint the atmosphere of departure I was experiencing. The red breaks through the cracked, lighter areas, as if something that was previously held in place is breaking free.
