About this artwork
The image's tranquility arises from the absence of any sharp edges – each layer blends seamlessly into the next. This layering itself creates the depth: each layer is thinner and lighter than the previous one, just as water, viewed from above, becomes lighter with depth until the beach beneath is visible.
The base is slaked lime and marble dust, topped with several highly diluted layers of acrylic paint and pigment. As it dries, this primer cracks… on its own – I don't control it; I work with what emerges. This fine network of cracks follows the color gradient and creates the effect of light refracting in water.
Towards the bottom, the color becomes warmer until the sandy beige at the lower edge almost radiates light. The transition from cool to warm is like the moment when, while swimming, you suddenly see the bright seabed below. In the lower third, there is no painted effect, but rather real sand from Mondragó, incorporated into the layer. This gives the work its true character.
Petra Maruschek uses painting as her medium and trained at art academies, including periods in Düsseldorf and Mallorca. Her technique is based on layers of lime plaster, marble dust, and diluted acrylic paints that merge to create vibrant, breathing surfaces with fascinating textures. Her style is abstract, yet full of sensory impressions of the Mallorcan landscape. Her works convey an intense emotional resonance and invite viewers to physically experience happiness, meditation, and the quiet energy of nature.
