About this artwork
In the blazing heat of the African desert, a black-backed jackal stands backlit. A pause permeates this fleeting moment. Using oil and a realistic style, I harnessed the warmth of the sunlight to depict the beauty and dignity of this animal amidst a challenging environment. It brings energy to any room—a symbol of nature and freedom that inspires reflection and wonder.
Philipp Schomaker is a self-taught painter and draftsman with a scientific background who has been working with oil painting and soft pastels since childhood. He works both with a meticulous attention to detail, using delicate lines and gradual color transitions, and more experimentally with a reduced color palette, inspired by Anders Zorn. His style oscillates between realistic depictions of nature and gentle interpretation. His works convey a deep connection to nature and make the emotional essence of animal and plant motifs tangible for the viewer.
