About this artwork
This painting was commissioned by a young couple, one was born in Montreal and the other in Detroit. They asked me for a painting that could depict both cities. I suggested several titles for the final version and they chose "Side by Side, Always".
This artwork seamlessly unites the waterfronts of Detroit and Montreal into a single harmonious composition, symbolizing the enduring connection between two souls and their beloved cities. On the right… side, Detroit's skyline rises proudly, its architecture landmarks reflecting its industrial heritage and resilience. On the left side, Montreal's waterfront enchants with its historic charm and the graceful silhouette of its iconic landmarks. The water, flowing gently between them, serves as both a boundary and a bond, blending the two cities into a shared story. Warm tones illuminate the scene, underscoring the themes of unity and love that inspired this artwork.

« My paintings reflect my love of architecture, be it breathtaking towers or ancient constructions. Buildings are an important testimonial of our presence on earth, and my artwork is about this presence. »
Renee De Gagne is an experienced Canadian painter who has exhibited her work throughout North America. She primarily explores architecture as an expressive statement of urban dynamics, and artistically captures the energy of cities through works marked by warm color palettes and a dance between the abstract and figurative. She paints instinctively, and always keeps memories, stories, histories and pictures of cities in her mind.
