About this artwork
This impressionistic painting depicts a tranquil winter landscape not far from the artist's home. A narrow, almost motionless river flows through the center of the picture, winding its way through the snowy landscape like a silent ribbon. Tall, bare trees line the banks to the left and right – their delicate branches reaching into the gray-blue winter sky and gently reflecting in the glassy water. The winter sun hangs low and breaks through the pale haze, bathing the snow cover in a soft, glowing white. Long shadows cast by the trees cast their shadows across the snow, lending the landscape depth and structure. On the nearby horizon, slightly shrouded in mist, one can vaguely discern dense bushes – a silent boundary between the river and the wider landscape. The color palette is restrained: cool blues, off-white, and delicate earth tones dominate the picture, creating a melancholic, peaceful atmosphere.
