About this artwork
The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the most unpolluted skies in the world, which is why it is home to the ALMA Observatory and other large scale astronomical telescope arrays. This painting evolved from watercolour studies of the sunset in the Atacama, where I spent some time painting. It is a companion to the other Atacama painting in this series.
Robin Richmond, a classically trained painter with deep roots in Rome and an esteemed international career. She trained at BA and MA level at London's Chelsea School of Art, and is also a lecturer, and author. Her technique bridges the boundary between figuration and loose abstraction, melding poetic landscapes with visible structures—horizons, reflections, trees, and water—anchoring the viewer in the “spirit of place.” Her emotive, site-specific works are contemplative distillations of memory, time, and presence, evoking a tranquil yet deeply resonant sense of connection to landscape and the passage of time. Robin has exhibited her work internationally for over 50 years and her work is in many prestigious museum and corporate collections. She has had over 45 one-woman exhibitions in London’s West End, including 20 years with the Curwen gallery and solo shows in the USA and France.
