About this artwork
I revisit master paintings from the 17th to the 19th centuries, including some contemporary paintings. During my BFA studies, I learned the painting techniques and styles of British, Dutch, German, American and Russian masters, amongst others. I started working conceptually on this new body of work in 2012, as the cartoon characters in my paintings were evolving. Selecting images of master paintings that interest me, I disrupt and alter the original… composition and intertwine it with cartoon parts and comic debris. The final step is to make an archival print on cotton, or archival cardstock paper. Some of these prints are taken a step further as I use them as a canvas to paint on top with my distinctive style. I appropriate the original image and re-contextualize it, using my style and making it my own. This is my way of paying homage to the masters of painting that I discovered as an art student and I admire until this day.
« "I use comic book images and adapt, combine, destroy, recombine, and layer them into completely new and energized compositions." »
