About this artwork
In the late 70's, Andy Warhol produced a series of 102 paintings called "Shadow paintings". He was inspired by photographs of cast shadows from his studio walls. The idea of seriality and repetition has been present in my work since I was in art school. Back in 2012 I created a series of seven paintings using shapes and debris from multiple comic books in order to create a "shadow" type like compositions inspired by Warhol's paintings. I was creating… compositions back then inspired by comic books, which are an important part of American Pop culture, with Andy Warhol being the most representative example of it. My series of paintings were displayed at an art gallery hanging one next to each other, creating a whole, or complete landscape type composition when observed all together. But I wanted each painting to stand on its own as well when hung individually at a collector's home. Each painting is a unique composition that can be admired by itself or together with the rest of the series.
« "I use comic book images and adapt, combine, destroy, recombine, and layer them into completely new and energized compositions." »
