About this artwork
The self-portrait is an important work for me, allowing me to gain clarity about myself and my work over time. It's a fantastic way to experiment with new palettes before applying them to commissions. Portrait painters have created self-portraits throughout history, and I'm joining their ranks. What's important for me is how my flesh tones and backgrounds evolve over time. I become more serene in the compositions, darker in the backgrounds, and overall… more vibrant.
Rupert Gredler is a painter who combines his mathematical training with artistic influences from Professor Franz Luby in Vienna, as well as workshops with Arik Brauer and Ernst Fuchs. His technique is expressive realism, inspired by Johannes Grützke and Lucian Freud, with occasional ironic and humorous elements. He creates large-format figure paintings, still lifes, and commissioned portraits, always focusing on the human figure. Through his works, Gredler conveys the absurdity and complexity of reality and touches the viewer with profound emotions surrounding the human condition.
