About this artwork
There is a moment in every uprooting when the roots become the most visible thing. In this painting, I placed that moment at the centre — a solitary tree, stripped bare, its trunk and roots emerging in charcoal grey against an eruption of white light, caught in the instant before or after something irreversible. Around it, the world is in motion. Teal and cobalt cascade from above in broad, urgent strokes — water, sky, or time itself, it is impossible… to say. Deep crimson cuts across the lower field like opened earth, like memory, like the kind of wound that doesn't announce itself until long after it has happened. The white at the centre is not emptiness — it is exposure. The tree stands in it fully vulnerable, fully alive. What may appear at first as abstraction is, for me, a form of portraiture — not of a face, but of a feeling: the particular weight of being pulled from where you belong, and the strange luminosity that follows when you find the courage to put down roots again.
Sanja Sarikaya is a painter with a deeply personal background shaped by war, displacement, and return, whose practice is grounded in memory and the collective stories of Vukovar. She uses recurring motifs—rivers, willow trees, roots, and Baroque arches—layered with symbolism, blending expressive color and evocative composition to create worlds that are both familiar and emotionally resonant. Her artworks radiate longing, resilience, and tenderness, inviting viewers to share in her nostalgic search for belonging and healing.
