This is a representative of a girl at boarding school in accordance with the artist's idea of a type. It is not a real person but the idea of that type.
This non-reality is reflected in the gloss, shine and smooth surface, with emphasis created by the black background. The hair and clothes are painterly to show… the mark of the hand and details show swift brushwork against smooth surface.
The expression of the girl is intriguing and further enhanced by dramatic lighting.
