About this artwork
material: oil, acrylic on canvas
Made with the "Picselazum" technique, it depicts the two persons in two moods, on the same surface. The first is painted in blue-greem on the canvas, beneath the pixels. The pixels are then created in a monotonous gray. The second portrait is painted over the pixels, and so creating two portraits, one above the other without touching. The third face is created in our minde, merging them together. But there is also… a fourth one: if the light is from the side, the two faces don't blend much, and the dominant one is the one on the surface of the pixels. However, if the light is from the front, the one beneath the pixels begins to stand out and dominate.
Perception depends largely on the viewer's position and the light itself. When using a red filter, only one of the two faces is visible: the one on the surface, and when using a blue filter, only the face behind the pixels is visible
Sargis Knyazyan, a painter born in Armenia and now based in Spain, works with innovative painting methods that reflect his deep artistic experience. He uses his pioneering "Picselazum" technique—pushing paint through the canvas to create pixelated textures—blending tactile, contemporary illusion with references to the past. His works are intensely expressive, evoking nostalgia, unity, and the intricate beauty and cruelty of the human experience.
