About this artwork
Basket not cardboard. This artwork signifies my art legacy on Tanzania having chosen the ungo or woven basket as my medium to signify the Tanzanian Heritage and a portrait of a woman in a head scarf and straight hair as my own depiction of not a typical African yet African artist with legacy of my art in Tanzania. I used acrylic, water colours, pesco markers and paper on an uneven woven surface reflecting an impressionistic and vintage style.
The… ungo produced locally has been used by women in the kitchen for centuries to winnow rice. The tradition of crafting these baskets dates back centuries. Made with natural materials such as grasses, reeds, and sisal, these baskets are meticulously woven by hand and the talent has been passed down by generations.
The use of vibrant, flowing colors juxtaposed with the natural patterns of the weave expresses a connection between the old and the new. It embodies a legacy of creativity while adding a burst of life and history to any space.
Shelina Khimji leverages various mediums such as acrylics, soft pastels, charcoal, watercolour, ceramics, and even coffee, grounded in a deep connection to traditional crafts. She masterfully executes impressionist techniques in her pieces, painting landscapes, portraits, and abstracts that encompass her broad artistic reach. Khimji's soulful brush stirs up memories and fantasies, lighting up her audiences' perceptions.
