About this artwork
In "Awakening", the chromatic play between darkness and bright lights works as a system of signs in which light and darkness become opposite signifiers, the first alludes to life, consciousness, hope; the second to sleep, oblivion, crisis. The title itself, Awakening, guides the semantic reading of the work, suggesting a symbolic narrative of passage: from chaos to order, from inner darkness to awareness.
The most dominant visual element, the glow… that pierces the sky, can be read as an "iconic sign" of revelation or rebirth, but also as an indication of a transformation in progress. The rough sea, with reflections of light in progress, becomes a metaphor for the subconscious, which welcomes the awakening of consciousness as an epiphanic event.
Thus the work is configured as a polysemic visual text, where the Awakening is not only physical or natural, but also spiritual and identity-related.
