About this artwork
Started in 2017 and still ongoing, the 'Spiraling Smoke" series depicts intertwined bodies floating in space. These paintings can be displayed in all directions, as their story is one of constant flux and cyclical time. I aim for a continuous quality where nothing has an endpoint, and one movement flows into the next, like a ribbon. visual expression of what our intuition already knows: all living things are interconnected; compassion and empathy is our universal nature; and the heart is the access point to our higher self. Since every figure depicted is a real person in my life, I also see this series as an exploration of the concept of reincarnation: “Every lifetime, we meet the same circle of souls, to say thank you or to say sorry, and once again exchange our roles." (From ‘Amen’ by Gogol Bordello, my favorite New York gypsy punk band.)

A Norwegian-born New Yorker, Sol KJØK has exhibited throughout Europe, Asia, and North America and is represented in museum collections on all three continents. Her work deals with the fundamental interconnection and interdependence of all things and the constraints imposed by our physical bodies. Her engaging process sees her, along with her artist friends serving as models, partake in acrobatic exercises. This lived experience helps her convey in imagery the paradox of strength and vulnerability that is the human condition.
